Help! I need an idiot's guide to assigning a midi note to a sustain pedal

Hi all

I know this has been done to death ... apologies for asking the same question.

I have an Axiom-25 and I want to assign a single note to be played by pressing the sustain pedal (the note triggers a sample).

I have read M-Audio's blurb "Assigning a MIDI Note to a Pad or Button" which was posted as a link by Jared in Sept 2011. The instructions seemed pretty bullet-proof but I just can't get anything to work.

here's what I do:

1. plug in the sustain pedal ... pressing it shows cc64 / z1 0 on the display
2. press EDIT
3. press Control Assign and enter 147.
4. press ENTER... display goes back to cc64 / z1 0
5. press EDIT
6. press DATA 1 .... nothing happens!!!

By pressing data 1 (Pitch/Note parameter) I should be able to select the midi note value but the display just shows the word "Edit"

If I press data 2 or data 3, the screen changes to show the current min/max values.... in fact, pressing ANY other key changes the display on the blue screen. The data 1 key seems dead.

So my question is - am I doing something wrong or does it look as if i really do have a dead (data 1) key? Is there another way to check this? If I'm doing something wrong, can you please tell me step-by-step how to assign a midi note to the sustain pedal ?

many thanks
